Butterfly Valve Types
What is a Butterfly Valve?
It is a type of valve used to provide fluid control.
Types of Butterfly Valves
We can decouple it into 2 types as Wafer and Lug according to the most
used varieties among ourselves. According to the flange connection, it
is healthier to use lug type at the line inlet and outlet when using
wafer type lines of butterfly valve types that we have decided between.
Wafer types usually have 4 ears, while Lug types have 4-8-10-12 ears
and have teeth pulled into the ear holes.
What does a Butterfly Valve consist of?
In general, we can say that the following parts are the Body, Disc, Shaft, Seat and Handle
Butterfly Valve Operation
The closing element is the disc rotating around a shaft located on the
vertical axis. It forms a disk that opens or closes the full pipe
section by rotating around its axis when assembled. Sealing is provided
between the metal decoiler and the elastic or plastic sealing elements
covering the inside of the body.
Choosing a Butterfly Valve Seat
The seal, which is decided according to the temperature and property of
the fluid, is very important for the longevity and healthy operation of
the valve. In general, we can classify butterfly valve seats into
EPDM, NBR, PTFE and VITON. The most widely used and well-known is EPDM.
Choosing a Butterfly Valve Disc
According to the fluid properties of the valves, we can divide the
casting nickel-plated valves into four as 304 Stainless Steel, 316
Stainless Steel, Aluminum Bronze. In mechanical installations, Cast
nickel-plated clad cladding is used, stainless steel is preferred in
the industrial field and aluminum bronze disc is preferred in the ship
sector.
Butterfly Valve Opening and Closing Mechanism
We can open and close Butterfly Valves with manual handle control, as
well as open and close them with a Gearbox installed on the valve, which
is usually used for large diameters. In industrial areas, butterfly
valves are mostly opened and closed using a pneumatic actuator or an
electric actuator.
Butterfly Valve Advantages
» Fast and simple installation
» Easy on and off
» Small volume and small weight
» The fact that its price is more affordable than other valves is one of the reasons for the choice.
Fields of Usage
» Used in treatment plants
» Heating cooling water in buildings is used in boiler room, exchanger room
» It is used in hot or cold water installations.
» Used in air lines, compressor line
» It is used in air conditioning plants.
» It is used in processes where viscous fluids such as cement, paint, powder, oil, etc. are used
» Used in the food industry
» Used in the shipbuilding industry
» It is used in petrochemical plants, chemical factories
» Used in the construction industry
» Used in the paper industry
» It is used in fire fighting systems, pumping stations, hidtofor systems
» Used in drinking water, beverage fluids
Considerations for Installing Butterfly Valves
» During the installation of the valve, there should be sufficient dec
between the flanges so that the sealing element is not deformed.
» The disk should not be in a closed position during the installation
of the valve.» Before tightening the flange nuts, the valve should be
opened and closed to check whether the disc is moving freely
